What is a SteamID?

Every Steam account has one permanent numeric identity. Steam shows it in several formats depending on where you look: community profile links use the 17-digit SteamID64, older Source games and server admin tools use STEAM_0:X:Y, newer games and logs use SteamID3, and CS2 or Dota 2 often show the short account ID.

Your display name and custom URL can change at any time. The SteamID never changes, which is why servers, ban lists, trading sites and bots store it instead of a name.

How to find your own SteamID

Open your profile in the Steam client or at steamcommunity.com and copy the address from the browser bar. If it looks like steamcommunity.com/profiles/7656119…, the 17-digit number is your SteamID64. If it looks like steamcommunity.com/id/yourname, paste it above and the finder resolves the custom URL to your SteamID64.

In the Steam client you can also open Account details: the SteamID is shown at the top of the page.

How the conversion works

All formats are derived from the account ID, a 32-bit number. SteamID64 = 76561197960265728 + account ID. In STEAM_0:X:Y, X is the lowest bit of the account ID and Y is the account ID divided by two, rounded down. SteamID3 writes the account ID directly as [U:1:account ID]. The FiveM steam: identifier is SteamID64 in hexadecimal.

Conversion between numeric formats is exact and needs no network request. Only a custom URL name has to be resolved by Steam.

Frequently asked questions

Is SteamID the same as my Steam username?

No. The username you sign in with is private and never needed here. The display name and custom URL are public but can change. The SteamID is a permanent number assigned to the account.

What is the steam: hex ID used by FiveM?

FiveM and some GTA V roleplay servers identify players as steam: followed by the SteamID64 written in hexadecimal, for example steam:1100001000056ba. The finder shows it for every account.

Can I find a SteamID from a display name?

Display names are not unique, so no reliable tool can map one to an account. Use the profile link or the custom URL name instead.

Why are the profile details empty?

Steam returns limited details for private profiles and nothing for accounts that do not exist. The ID formats are still calculated exactly from the number.
