How Steam levels work

Your Steam level grows with XP. Most XP comes from badges: crafting a game badge from its trading cards, completing seasonal event badges and community badges. Each badge level adds XP, so collectors and long-time players have the highest levels.

Every level costs more XP than the one before it in blocks of ten. Levels 1 to 10 cost 100 XP each, levels 11 to 20 cost 200 XP each, and so on. That is why the ten levels from 100 to 110 cost 11,000 XP, more than reaching level 40 from scratch.

What a higher level unlocks

Steam adds five friend slots for every level above the base limit, one extra profile showcase every ten levels, and a better chance to receive trading card booster packs. Levels do not affect games, matchmaking or market fees.

Account age and the Years of Service badge

Steam stores the date an account was created and shows it for public profiles. The checker turns it into the account age. The Years of Service badge on the profile shows the same age in whole years.

Old accounts with a long history, real games and no bans are trusted more by trading sites, server admins and anti-cheat systems. A brand new account with a high level bought from a level-up bot is a common warning sign.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see the level of a private profile?

Steam's public Web API only returns the level, badges and game library when the profile is public. The SteamID formats and bans are still shown for every account.

How is account age calculated?

From the creation date Steam publishes for the profile, counted to today. If the owner hides the profile, Steam does not share the date and the age stays unknown.

Does a high Steam level mean the account is safe?

Not on its own. Levels can be bought through card trading bots. Check the account age, the game library and the ban status together, which this checker does in one step.

Can I check my own level and XP?

Yes. Paste your own profile link. The checker shows your total XP and how much is left to the next level.
